Most of us don’t bother about their
hair loss and take their hand for granted until they fall out. For individuals
with a mature hair loss pattern, hair transplant is a revolutionary treatment
that can bring them the strands that they have lost.
What
is a Hair Transplant?
Hair transplant is a surgical hair
restoration procedure that involves transplantation of hair from a donor area
to a recipient area.
Donor
Area
The donor area is selected either at
the back or sides of the scalp. In a male or female pattern baldness, the hair
at crown and back of the scalp don’t fall as they have baldness resistant
characteristics. These non-balding hairs are used to fill up the bald areas of
the scalp.
Recipient
Area
The area of the scalp that suffers
from baldness is said to be a recipient area in a hair transplantation
procedure. In a pattern baldness, the recipient areas are mostly at the top and
front of the scalp.
How
to perform?
The procedure is done in the doctor’s
clinic. In the start, a local anesthesia is administered to ease off any
possible discomfort during the procedure. The surgeon cleans off the donor and
recipient areas of the scalp and numbs the area with a medicine. Then the
surgeon will choose a suitable technique for your problem between FUE and FUT.
Here are the steps included in a
hair transplantation:
Preparing
Donor Area
In the start, donor areas are
trimmed and prepared to extract the required hair follicles to place at the
recipient area.
Extraction
at Donor area
Once the donor area is prepared and
trimmed, the hair follicles are extracted with the help of a special tool.
Suturing
of the donor area
Once the required air grafts are
obtained, this area will be sutured.
Donor
tissues are divided into follicular unit grafts
In the case of FUT hair transplant,
a strip of hair is removed and that is further divided into follicular units to
place them at the recipient areas.
Preparation
of Recipient Areas
The recipient area is cleaned and
prepared for the procedure ahead.
Making
incisions at the bald areas
Incisions are made on the recipient
area to insert the obtained hair follicles into them.
Grafts
are placed into the recipient areas
The surgeon places the grafts at
recipient areas according to their densities.
Immediately after the procedure, you
will observe redness and slight swell but it will go away in 24 hours.
Recovery
Period
Since it is a surgical procedure, it
requires you to take rest for at least next 48 hours and after that, you can
resume your daily routine with taking proper care steps.
How
to prepare
At the pre-op meeting, your surgeon
will guide you on how to properly prepare for a hair transplant procedure. Some
of the instructions include:
- Avoid smoking for 2-3 days as suggested by the doctor
- Avoid alcoholic beverages for few days
- Don’t take anti-inflammatory medicines for at least 2
weeks
- If you are a diabetic patient keep your sugar and blood
level in control
- Take medications that are prescribed by your surgeon
Cost
of a hair Transplant
The cost of a hair transplant varies
from person to person depending on the hair loss condition and behavior of the
hairs. Here are the factors that play their role in setting up the cost of a
hair transplant.
- Number of required grafts
- Number of sessions
- Surgeons fee
- Standard of procedure
- Size of the treated area
- Geographical location of the treatment center
